I would suggest while it’s important for there to be a role for ethicists within business, in and of itself, it is insufficient, and I’ve love to see companies make this explicit. I have two reasons.

The first is it’s important to ensure ethics becomes embedded within organisational culture in addition to there being a specific job function.

Second, I have seen arguments made that we don’t need regulation because we have an ‘ethicist’ or we’re doing this internally. Suffice to say this is a position I would disagree with.
